CANINE INFLUENZA

Vetsuite_Img_71117

IS NOW IN OUR AREA

ERVH IS NOW REQUIRING CANINE INFLUENZA VACCINATION FOR ALL STAYS IN OUR HOSPITAL. THESE INCLUDE BOARDING, GROOMING AND ELECTIVE PROCEDURES THAT REQUIRE HOSPITALIZATION.  PLEASE CALL TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT TO HAVE YOUR DOG VACCINATED.  THE INITIAL VACCINATION REQUIRES A BOOSTER IN THREE WEEKS. THEREAFTER, ONLY AN ANNUAL VACCINE IS REQUIRED.

Canine Influenza Virus (CIV) is a highly contagious respiratory infection of dogs caused by a novel Influenza A subtype H3N8 virus that was first discovered in 2004.  Like influenza viruses for other species, CIV causes flu like illness consisting of cough, sneezing, and nasal discharge. Virtually all exposed dogs become infected; about 80% develop flu like illness, while another 20% do not become ill.

Unlike human influenza, canine influenza is not a “seasonal” infection. Infections can occur year round.

A vaccine is now available for this disease! Since infection rates in exposed dogs approaches 100% and, of those, 50-80% will become ill, we are recommending the vaccine for our patients that are "at risk" due to lifestyle.

Does your dog:
Board at a kennel or go to doggie day care?
Visit a groomer or dog park?
Engage and play with other dogs?
Attend group training or dog "events?"

IF SO, YOUR DOG SHOULD BE VACCINATED!

Please call our office for additional information and to schedule an appointment

so that your dog can be protected.
